I want for christmas is you

Christmas, christmas on land and sea.

«All I Want For Christmas Is You» is a single by American singer Mariah Carey, released on November 1, 1994 as the first single from her fourth studio album Merry Christmas. As of 2013, it earned over fifty million royalties and sold 16.5 million copies becoming one of the best-selling singles in history.

After the worldwide success of Music Box, released in 1993, Columbia Records began to consider the singer’s idea to release a Christmas album. The label’s directors perceived that, until that moment, Mariah Carey was only seen as a pop singer and therefore aimed, through the release of this album, to turn her into an integral artist and, consequently, widen her reference audience. After the release of the album, many promotional singles were released, but only All I Want For Christmas is you was officially released as a single and sent to all radio stations.

The singer wrote All I Want For Christmas is you with Walter Afanasieff while recording the entire Merry Christmas album in mid-1994. The song is an uptempo Christmas song with pop, R&B and dance pop influences and incorporates various instruments, including synthesizers, chimes, bass and cowbell in its arrangement. All I want for Christmas is that it is four minutes and one second long and was written in the key of G major. The song has a moderate tempo and Carey’s vocal extension ranges from the lowest note G 3 to the highest note A 5. The song’s lyrics refer to the fact that the singer doesn’t care about Christmas presents or lights, all she wants for Christmas is to spend time with her beloved. Apparently the song was inspired by Carey’s romantic feelings for her then-husband Tommy Mottola, although Mariah Carey in an interview told the inspiration from which the song was born: .

Afanasieff confessed to being «perplexed» when he realized Carey’s intentions for the melody and vocal scales, although the performer remained «adamant» in her choices.[23] The composer later detailed the songwriting and recording process as follows:

Back in California, Afanasieff concluded production of the song. While he developed a version in which a live band played drums and other instruments with the intention of creating a more «raw and affective» sound, he opted to scrap it to instead use a personal arrangement that required effects programming, as well as piano sounds, drums and a triangle. Because Carey was simultaneously writing other lyrics at her rented home in The Hamptons, Afanasieff waited for her for a while longer to overlay and harmonize the background vocals.[23] The song was then released to the public.

MTV’s Kyle Anderson called the tune «a majestic anthem filled with chimes, doo-wop [a variant of rhythm and blues] features, strings, and one of the most dynamic and cleanest performances in Carey’s entire career.» [5] In her assessment of the 2009 version, Becky Bain of the website Idolator concluded that the song is a «timeless classic» and commented, «We love the original song-we sing it while decorating our Christmas tree and lighting our menorah.»[35] In her assessment of the 2009 version, Becky Bain of the website Idolator concluded that the song is a «timeless classic» and remarked, «We love the original song-we sing it while decorating our Christmas tree and lighting our menorah.»[35
