It has a brownish-green or brown carapace. It is flattened, with a slightly patent vertebral keel. Its plastron is yellow, sometimes with black spots. Some specimens also have yellowish, orange or reddish lines on the neck.

Schweigger described this species in 1812, the name leper is due to the fact that the first specimens he examined were old and had infected sutures on the shells that resembled a kind of leprosy between the scales. These turtles usually have a very worn and dirty appearance that reinforces the name: algae usually grow on the shell and have a worn shell and skin. In addition, juveniles often have orange or reddish spots on scutes and legs, which may resemble ulcerations or similar.

These reptiles are excellent swimmers. During the day they look for prey to feed on and try to capture it. They are usually alert for predators and people and generally become frightened and run away from them. Turtles tend to jump frantically from rocks or resting places if something potentially dangerous approaches them. During the day, they usually come out of the water to bask in the sun until they are dry and warm to regulate their temperature, then they dive back in and cool off, and come out of the water again to bask in the sun.
