raccoon meaning

The reality of raccoons, moreover, is far from the romantic image we often have of them. Far from the idyllic childish cinematographic image that has been spread about this carnivorous mammal, raccoons are not tender pets, but wild animals that, due to their nocturnal habits, their activity and aggressiveness, are very unsuitable to coexist with humans.

Raccoons have been considered by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge as an invasive exotic species since 2013. The ministry itself admits that their «eradication is very difficult».

In fact, in a study carried out by the Ministry of Environment of Madrid, in which they studied eight captured and sterilized specimens to know their movement patterns, it was concluded that «there is a need to carry out a constant capture until its total eradication is achieved».

To this end, in the study, the authorities are committed to increasing the capture effort «before and during the breeding season». «It is therefore necessary to start captures before March in order to trap and eliminate reproductive females and prevent the birth of offspring,» it concludes.
