Nearly 184,000 runners from 135 different countries participated this Sunday in a new edition of the Wings for Life World Run, the race that is run simultaneously around the world and whose entire proceeds go to research into spinal cord injuries.

The winners of the Barcelona edition were Martí Barrachina, who covered 25.67 km, and Marta Quero, who was overtaken by the Catcher Car at kilometer 23.85. Barrachina said on his arrival at the finish line that «I congratulate the organization for this great initiative and thank the Red Bull team for making it possible. On a personal level, I am very happy with the result, as I have far exceeded my initial objective, although the important thing is not winning but the money we have raised for research into spinal cord injuries».

Marta Quero, for her part, commented that she felt very supported by the rest of the runners from all over the world: «It is a race that has something very special. In spite of running virtually all over the world, I have felt at all times the emotion of participating with thousands of people by my side», she explained.

As usual, the race will start worldwide at 13:00 CET. The race format is the most characteristic feature of this event, as there is no defined finish line. 30 minutes after the start, a car, the Catcher Car, will start chasing the runners. Each runner’s race will end when they have been overtaken by the car, which will gradually increase its speed.

Wings for Life Word Run is a worldwide solidarity race. 100% of the registration fee goes to research for a cure for spinal cord injuries through the Wings for Life Foundation, which funds world-class scientific research and clinical trials around the world with the goal of curing spinal cord injuries.

Some 184,000 runners from 135 different countries participated this Sunday in a new edition of the Wings for Life World Run, the race that is run simultaneously around the world and whose proceeds, in their entirety, are destined to research to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.

The winners of the Barcelona edition were Martí Barrachina, who covered 25.67 km, and Marta Quero, who was overtaken by the Catcher Car at kilometer 23.85. Barrachina commented on his arrival at the finish line: «I congratulate the organization for this great initiative and thank the Red Bull team for making it possible. On a personal level, I am very happy with the result, as I have far exceeded my initial goal, although the important thing is not winning but the money we have raised for research into spinal cord injuries».

The global winners were Sweden’s Aron Anderson, who completed 66.80 kilometers, and Nina Zarina of the United States, with 61.1 kilometers. The race system is peculiar: each participant downloaded an application that tracks the distance covered. After half an hour, a virtual car starts chasing the runners and when this ‘car’ catches up with them, the participation ends, informing them of the distance and time covered and their place in the list of results.
