La Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) es un organismo del Gobierno de España encargado de proporcionar la previsión meteorológica, los avisos de fenómenos meteorológicos peligrosos y la asistencia a las administraciones en las tareas de protección civil y defensa y seguridad del Estado. La AEMET forma parte de la Secretaría de Estado de Medio Ambiente del Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y tiene su sede en la Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid. La agencia fue conocida como Instituto Central de Meteorología desde 1887 hasta 1978 y como Instituto Nacional de Meteorología desde 1978 hasta 2008, cuando adoptó su nombre actual[2].
La AEMET realiza su labor mediante la recogida de datos de su red de centros. La agencia cuenta con centros distribuidos por las regiones y tiene oficinas en casi todos los aeropuertos y bases aéreas. Además, existen observatorios sinópticos repartidos por toda la geografía española.
Representa a España en instituciones meteorológicas internacionales, como la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM), la Organización Europea para la Explotación de Satélites Meteorológicos (EUMETSAT) y el Centro Europeo de Predicción Meteorológica a Medio Plazo (ECMWF).
