En el análisis multivariante, la dosis diaria de 800 UI se mostró como un factor protector (p = .044) para alcanzar los niveles sanguíneos óptimos (≥30 ng/ml). Según las curvas de Kaplan-Meier, los pacientes menores de 10 años alcanzaron antes los niveles óptimos que los mayores (p = 0,002), así como los que no estaban siendo tratados con hidroxiurea (p = 0,039).
