The track listing of For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones) includes names like Rosalia, The National, The Weeknd or Mumford & Sons, among others. We’re not quite clear why these groups have been selected for this alternative to the Game of Thrones soundtrack, but hey…. here it goes:

As promised, the Thrones returns to offer us an episode entirely of battle, after last week’s farewell flavor, and with the enemy finally planted in the capital of the North. At the helm of this cinematic epic, we have Miguel Sapochnik, director of the well-known «Austere House» (5×08) or «Battle of the Bastards»(6×09), among others. Let’s go for the analysis of this 82-minute Long Night.

And from the initial tension a deep haze is generated to further disorient the combatants. Edd the Sorrowful is among the first to fall, ending his watch after defending Sam, his black brother at the Wall. Meanwhile, the dragons try to slow down the stampede of the dead with their flares, and incidentally facilitate our visibility in front of the screen. The matter of setting the trenches on fire gets complicated when the Night King sticks his nose in, but finally Melisandre is decisive in slowing down the enemy’s advance with her arts.

Note: with all the accumulated vidriagon and after obtaining so much weaponry from this material, was it so complicated to prepare siege machinery with it? So complicated to show some effectiveness in defensive maneuvers? I seriously missed it, with all the emphasis given to it in previous episodes, including episode 7×07 with the demonstration at Dragon Well….

The night king song

Listening closely to the lyrics of the Game of Thrones song, we see that it speaks of Jenny of Piedrasviejas, a peasant woman who marries Duncan Targaryen, eldest son of Aegon V. Duncan was heir to the Iron Throne, but forfeited his right to the throne by going against his father’s wishes to marry a Baratheon daughter and marrying instead Jenny, the woman he truly loved. As for the lyrics of «Jenny of Oldstones», this could refer to the tragedy of Summerhall (Summer Haven), a summer retreat for the Targaryens that was destroyed by a terrible fire, in which a good part of the family died.

It is therefore possible that the lyrics of «Jenny of Oldstones» refer to Jenny’s grief and sorrow over the death of her beloved husband in that fire, although it is also possible that Jenny died in the fire and is one of the many ghosts in the song. In George R.R. Martin’s novels, Jenny’s song is first mentioned in Storm of Swords, although the full lyrics have never been shown until now in the television series.

Let’s see the next one, it’s over. I really enjoyed seeing them together in front of the fire. Seeing so many characters that we have been introduced to, each with such different journeys was quite moving.

We’ve been getting to know the lives of so many characters for 7 seasons now; many of them left behind a legacy, many others have survived until now. What did you want, the war to start in a rush from the first episode? Did you want another episode like the one in season 7 where everything happened at an absurd speed?
