The true story that adapts ‘All the Money in the World’ is extraordinary, as the story of John Paul Getty III’s kidnapping is so peculiar that it’s hard to imagine that something interesting couldn’t come out of it. Not even the fact that David Scarpa’s script introduces a series of changes so that the dramatic weight falls on his mother should be an obstacle to this, but the truth is that the film ends up being much more conventional than desirable.

If you look closely, most of the striking details surrounding the kidnapping and ransom payment are there, including the grandfather’s toughness in negotiating – even the fact that he was only willing to pay the maximum amount that could be deducted for tax purposes – but the treatment of it is somewhat disappointing. One reason is that perhaps more attention is paid to what is not so interesting.

To be specific, Plummer plays an old man whose life revolves almost exclusively around money. That allows him several moments to shine, but he does so more because of the unexpectedness of his attitude than because his performance is particularly memorable. In fact, I think Spacey would have given him much better that touch of the character’s intrinsic hijoputism that here does not reach its full splendor in Plummer’s nonetheless remarkable performance.

All the Money in the World (All the Money in the World) is a 2017 American crime drama film directed by Ridley Scott and based on John Pearson’s novel, Painfully Rich: The Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty. Starring Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, Mark Wahlberg, Romain Duris, Charlie Plummer, Andrew Buchan and Timothy Hutton, the film’s plot tells the biographical account of billionaire businessman J. Paul Getty’s sustained refusal in the 1970s to cooperate with the extortion demands of a group of kidnappers from the organized crime group ‘Ndrangheta, who had kidnapped and mutilated his grandson John Paul Getty III.

Paul is held hostage in a remote location in Italy. Initially, his captors, particularly Cinquanta, are tolerant of him because his calm and submissive demeanor causes them few problems. However, things become increasingly tense as the weeks pass without the ransom being paid, much more than the captors anticipated. Discussions arise over whether to move Paul to a new location as winter approaches and his hideout is unsuitable for the cold conditions. One of the kidnappers accidentally shows his face to Paul, and he considers killing Paul so that he cannot be identified, but one of the other kidnappers kills him first. His burned and disfigured body is recovered in the river; investigators misidentify the body as Paul’s, but Gail examines the body and refutes this.
